West Lake part 2
After our walk, we boarded a boat for a tour around the lake. It was all in Chinese, so we missed most of it. Our guide did tell us some of it though. There is a huge pagoda on a high hill that was built in celebration of the emperor's son. The put pieces of the Buddhist scripture is each brick. When the Japanese attacked, they weakened the structure of the pagoda until it finally collapsed completely. The people rebuilt it in 2000, and when they were working on the foundation, they found silver and gold buried in the ground. We finished up with lunch at Grandma's kitchen. We had fried noodles, sweet and sour pork, beef ribs, spring rolls, egg custard, and a cake for Matt. The cake was loaf of bread baked in a square with butter and ice cream on top. They just don't do decadent desserts like we are accustomed to. Unfortunately, anna thought we were going to Grandma's house and was quite disappointed when Grandma wasn't there. We are still trying to explain that! She stills asks every day if Papa is picking us up today.
